Following a VAR interview, Jones, 22, was given a red card by referee Simon Hooper in the 26th minute for an improper challenge on Yves Bissouma. Hooper initially issued the Red midfielder a yellow card, but he later changed his mind after viewing the tackle on the pitchside monitor.
In a game that was tainted by a severe VAR error, Diogo Jota was also dismissed. Despite technology’s interference, a goal was scored in the first half.
The mistake was described in the apologies as a “significant human error” since VAR referee Darren England was unaware that the goal had previously been ruled illegal. However, Liverpool reacted by issuing their own statement.The first significant event of a frantic game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium—which the hosts ultimately won 2-1—was Jones’ red card. Gary Neville, who was commentating on the game for Sky Sports at the time, criticized the choice to upgrade Jones’ yellow card to a red one.
“No, I know when you’re doing someone on purpose, I’ve done myself in the past, and he’s not doing that,” he stated in response to the challenge. He’s showing the referee [the VAR] the finish motion, but that’s not how it should be done.
If you watch the slow-motion portion of it, you’ll realize that it’s a red card. The speed at which these players rush into tackles—Bissouma is flying in, and so is Curtis Jones—must be observed in full motion at high speed. However, I thought a yellow would have been appropriate given the ambiguity surrounding something like that.
The FA will also impose a £25,000 fine on Liverpool as a direct result of their actions during that particular game. Hooper issued warnings to four further Liverpool players during the game in addition to Jones and Jota, who both received red cards. Peter Krawietz, Jurgen Klopp’s assistant, was also given a warning.
