Liverpool hasn’t been mentioned as a title contender, but maybe for the top four? Not really. But can you already feel the 2013–14 season coming on?
The Reds have a strong start with 13 points out of a possible 15, but it hasn’t been without drama and the need for late rallies.
An implausible attempt at the title cannot be ruled out, and it has slightly altered the discourse surrounding Liverpool and the fans’ expectations for what is achievable this season.
On the This Is Anfield podcast with The Late Challenge and Gareth Roberts, Paul Cope stated, “I think we could win the league this season, I wasn’t saying that months ago.”
After failing to sign any players during the transfer window, the pair conceded that Jurgen Klopp’s team needed to be lucky with injuries, especially in defense, but there is rising momentum and belief.
I wondered about this season, and like you, I said, “I don’t think we challenge for the title this season,” before a ball was kicked, Roberts remarked.
Now that I think about it, might this be one of those improbable title challenge seasons with a good wind and some luck with injuries? Who anticipated that we would compete for the crown in 2013–2014?
The team built on fast sand’s title bid in 2013–14 was an exhilarating trip that ended in sorrow, but as Roberts puts it, “when you’re on this run of 16 unbeaten in the league, who knows? You don’t rule it out at this point, right?
Brendan Rodgers led Liverpool to 84 points during that season. With Man City once again setting the bar so high, there is very little room for error, and the Reds have already proven themselves.
You really can’t maintain that level of emotion, Carragher stated after Arsenal celebrated victories like they had already won the championship halfway through the season. I believe Neville also said it.
City may be due some bad luck; according to Roberts, Liverpool must be ready if it does. City themselves have had to use their resiliency this season.
Liverpool needs to be prepared in case that occurs. Who anticipated Leicester would win the league? You may win improbable titles.
Indeed!
It’ll be fascinating when City has to play us, Arsenal, Spurs now, and Brighton, Cope noted, adding that “I do think there are more sides in the league now who could take points off City.”I believe each of those teams could score against City. If we can all chip away at them when we play them, it will keep them in the pack, therefore we all need to band together against them.
