James Milner continues torturing Man United even after leaving Liverpool, and his most recent victory adds to an already outstanding record.
Milner might still be a Liverpool player this season if some inside the club had understood how things would turn out later in the summer.
The 37-year-old has played in each of the Seagulls’ five games so far this season, and four of those games have ended in victories for Roberto De Zerbi’s team.
At Old Trafford on Saturday, Brighton defeated Man United convincingly, 3-1, despite being the visiting team and having more possession.
Milner came off the bench for the final 13 minutes to finish the game at left-back as United were hammered throughout.
According to Opta, the veteran has defeated Man United 11 times in the Premier League, more than any other player in the competition’s history.
In addition, Milner is the first player to defeat the Manchester team while playing for four separate teams: Aston Villa, Man City, Liverpool, and now Brighton.
He is also tied for the joint-most road victories since the Premier League’s inception in 1992 with six victories on the road against United in the league.
The fact that Milner has played in the top division for 22 seasons and still has the second-highest number of encounters with United (35) over Chelsea (36) is undoubtedly contributing to this.
Only Ryan Giggs has played in as many consecutive Premier League seasons; this season, Milner is expected to pass the former United midfielder in terms of appearances.
Regardless, his record is outstanding, underlining his role in those four clubs’ victories over United.
Milner has only been more effective in front of goal against five other Premier League opponents than his record of three goals and four assists against United.
