In Liverpool’s 3-1 victory over Wolves, Alexis Mac Allister was substituted at the break. It is debatable whether the midfielder should have ever started.
Mac Allister returned to the lineup on Saturday after traveling to Argentina to face Ecuador and then Bolivia on the road.
This is true despite the fact that he had little preparation time after arriving late from South America, where he needed a breathing machine to cope with Bolivia’s high altitude.
It was expected that he would put up a slow performance, which cost Liverpool the game at Molineux in the first half because he was playing at No. 6.
When Mac Allister entered for halftime, the Reds were trailing 1-0 thanks to a goal from Hwang Hee-chan and had already received a booking for a careless pull on Matheus Cunha.
And as anticipated, Jurgen Klopp made the appropriate adjustment by substituting Luis Diaz for the Argentine, and Liverpool went on to rally for a 3-1 triumph.
After the game, Mac Allister said on Instagram, “Nice to be back,” saying, “It’s never easy but extremely important to win after the international break.”
The Reds’ 12.30 p.m. kickoff on their return only served to exacerbate the difficulties of the international break.
Wataru Endo’s inclusion on the bench was puzzling given that the Japanese midfielder had visited Germany and Belgium during the international break, but Klopp has yet to demonstrate confidence in his £16 million acquisition.
Fortunately, the mistake wasn’t too expensive, and Liverpool had the tenacity to come back and win three points away from home.
