Premier League issue for Liverpool revealed as £330 million transfer shortage appears

After the magnitude of their goal to regain a spot in the top four was highlighted, many of Liverpool’s Premier League opponents are leaving them behind in the transfer market.

The CIES Football Observatory’s yearly list of the most expensively put together teams in leagues throughout the world has been made public.

They estimated the Reds will have spent up to £663m putting together their current squad of players under Jurgen Klopp, which is a little decrease from the transfer costs paid for the team’s roster from the previous campaign.

Due to London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur outspending Liverpool’s squad spending, the Reds drop from fifth to seventh overall in the standings.

And when it comes to the amount of money spent on assembling a team to contend for both the ultimate title of champions and Champions League qualification, the Reds are also behind three other Premier League clubs.

After spending a staggering £990 million on their current team, Manchester United has surpassed Manchester City as the greatest spender. With a spending spree under owner Todd Boehly over the past 15 months, Chelsea sits second with a total expenditure of £976 million, followed by City with £897 million.

The only team outside of England that is ranked above Liverpool is Paris Saint-Germain, who spent £861 million on their current roster. The top four have each spent more than one billion euros on transfer fees.

Liverpool is the team with the most goalie spending, but they rank only 10th for defenders, behind Aston Villa, and are only the eighth-biggest spenders on midfielders, despite making significant investments this summer. The only teams that have spent more on forward players are PSG and Manchester United.

There are 11 Premier League teams in the top 20, including Everton, who is oddly ranked 14th, ahead of Napoli, the Italian champions, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, and Al-Hilal, the richest team in the Saudi Pro League.
