Diogo Jota had a memorable night for Portugal last night, scoring twice and dishing out an assist in a convincing 9-0 win over Luxembourg.
The Liverpool attacker played the whole 90 minutes on this occasion after being benched by Roberto Martinez for Portugal’s Euro 2024 qualifier against Slovakia on Friday as his nation took command of Group J and made significant progress toward sealing their spot at next year’s tournament in Germany.
Bruno Fernandes assisted Jota in scoring his first goal of the game. Jota then made no mistakes in beating the goalkeeper with a powerful finish. The 26-year-old then set up teammate Ricardo Horta to score a similar goal ten minutes later. With 13 minutes left, he added a second goal of his own from inside the penalty area.
It was undoubtedly a difficult night for Luxembourg’s opponents, whose manager elected to leave the field and return to the dressing room after Fernandes’ 8-0 goal in the 83rd minute.
