Nunez was acquired by Liverpool from Benfica in an £85 million deal last summer. After scoring for his former team in the Champions League the season before against the Merseyside outfit, the Uruguayan international signed a six-year deal at Anfield.

The 24-year-old had a difficult time adjusting to English football and was dismissed in his second Premier League game against Crystal Palace. However, after a period of adjustment, the South American finished the season with 19 goal contributions and 15 goals scored in 42 appearances for the Reds.
Liverpool decided not to acquire any forward players during the summer transfer window, putting their trust in the options currently available, despite Roberto Firmino leaving when his contract expired at the end of the previous season.
