Jurgen Klopp only signed a new deal with Liverpool last year, but the German FA may show interest in the Anfield manager shortly after they parted ways with Hansi Flick on Sunday.
Flick, 57, was already under fire following Germany’s group-stage elimination from the 2022 World Cup, but the ex-Bayern Munich coach’s humiliating 4-1 loss to Japan on Saturday night proved to be his undoing.
Klopp is regarded as one of the world’s best managers, and hiring him would be seen as a big victory for the German FA, which will be looking to make a splash before hosting the European Championships next summer.
Although Klopp acknowledged that leading his nation would be a “great honor,” he also emphasized that he would not be willing to forego his Liverpool contract in order to take the job. Currently, the 56-year-old is committed to the team through the 2026 summer season.
It is important to note, though, that Klopp does plan to leave Anfield after his journey there is through. Additionally, his contract contains an escape clause, meaning Liverpool will assist in making a return to Germany when the time comes.
Although Klopp has previously stated his wish to take a break after leaving the Reds, it is unclear whether or not the German FA’s real interest would cause him to alter his long-term plans.
“I can’t just up and leave Liverpool now and declare that I’ll rule Germany for a while. The request isn’t even there, therefore that doesn’t function. I need to be available if I’m going to do it at some time, which I’m not at the moment. I have an obligation to the club.
