Summer 2023: Comparison of Liverpool’s net spending with the rest of the Premier League

With the addition of Ryan Gravenberch from Bayern Munich as the Reds’ fourth midfield signing of the summer, Liverpool finished the transfer window by overhauling their engine room.

With the acquisitions for Gravenberch (£34m), Dominik Szoboszlai (£60m), Wataru Endo (£16m), and Alexis Mac Allister (£35m), Liverpool has spent over £145m on new players while making back £52m from the sales of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson to the Saudi Pro League.

The Reds have spent over £93 million altogether, which is their greatest amount under FSG since 2018–19, when they utilized the proceeds from Philippe Coutinho’s January departure to pay for agreements for players like Fabinho and Alisson.

While there has been much discussion about whether the Reds have done enough this time around, that summer turned out to be transformative for Liverpool.

But how does Liverpool’s spending this window stack up against the rest of their competitors?

The Reds are currently sixth in the Premier League for net spending for the summer 2023 transfer window, behind Chelsea (obviously), Manchester United, Newcastle, Arsenal, and (less obviously) Bournemouth, according to Sky Sports’ estimations.

The top spenders this summer, Chelsea, have spent a total of £197.2 million, which is £84.8 million more than Liverpool.

Sky’s statistics, meanwhile, should be viewed with some skepticism because, while they claim that Liverpool spent £55 million on the acquisition of Mac Allister, the actual sum may be significantly higher.
Sky ranks Liverpool sixth in the table for pure outlays on new transfers once more, but only ninth for money collected from player sales.
