Mario Balotelli may be wondering, “Why still me?” today after his current club FC Sion banned him from first-team practice in an effort to get rid of him.
The widely raveled striker signed a £2 million contract with the Swiss team last summer from Turkish club Adana Demirspor, but he only managed six goals as they were demoted from the Super League. And even though he still has one year left on his current contract, the club seems to have run out of patience with the player who was previously touted as their biggest signing ever.
The contentious Italian hasn’t played a single minute for the team during the 2023–24 season, and he’s now almost certain to make another career change. In his professional career, the former Man City and Liverpool player has already represented 10 clubs while playing his sport in five different nations.
After previously quarrelling with Balotelli, FC Sion Sporting Director Barth Constantin has now provided an open update on the 33-year-old’s future. Following a summer of revolution in the Saudi Pro League, it appears that he may be the most well-known athlete to move to the Middle East.
“A Saudi club has expressed interest in Mario Balotelli, but there has been no concrete action taken,” Constantin informed the media. We’ll have to wait and see what transpires because the Saudi transfer window will close after the European one. Mario, meanwhile, is currently working out apart from the first-team group at our Riddes headquarters.
The club representative also promised to find a “solution to the problem.” It comes after his namesake and the president of FC Sion, Christian Constantin, publicly criticized the previous season’s Premier League and FA Cup champion.
