Duke’s Jon Scheyer Calls Player ‘A Genius

Duke’s Jon Scheyer Calls Player ‘A Genius’ — Despite No-Favorites Rule: ‘You Can’t Ignore What He’s Shown… He Might Be Our Secret Weapon’

Jon Scheyer has made one thing clear since taking over as Duke’s head coach: no favorites, no shortcuts, and no free passes. Every player must earn their place — with effort, consistency, and impact. But this week, Scheyer made an exception… and the entire basketball world is paying attention.

In a surprising moment during team media availability, Scheyer openly praised one of his players, calling him “a genius on the court.” The comment sent waves through Duke circles, not only because of its intensity — but because it broke from Scheyer’s usual even-keeled tone.

“I don’t use that word loosely,” Scheyer said. “But with what he’s been doing on the floor lately… it’s just smart, next-level basketball. You can’t ignore what he’s shown. He’s already becoming a secret weapon for us.”

Though Scheyer didn’t confirm which player he was referencing, multiple insiders suggest it’s a sophomore guard who’s been quietly taking over in closed practices — running the offense with precision, elevating teammates, and playing beyond his years.

“He’s not the loudest guy in the gym, but he’s always in control,” one assistant coach said. “He’s seeing things before they happen. That’s what Jon meant by ‘genius.’ It’s about court IQ.”

What makes Scheyer’s praise even more powerful is the context behind it. At the start of the summer, the Duke coach reminded his squad that there would be no favorites — that positions, minutes, and roles would be earned through sweat and execution, not hype or history.

Yet this unnamed player has risen above expectations, not just by playing well, but by displaying the kind of awareness and leadership that coaches crave.

“He processes the game at a different pace,” Scheyer added. “Whether it’s spacing, decision-making, or just being in the right spot at the right time — he’s seeing the game like a coach would. That’s rare.”

With Duke entering another high-pressure season, the need for under-the-radar difference-makers has never been more important. Veterans are expected to lead. Freshmen will bring flashes. But it’s often the so-called “glue guys” — players with intelligence, timing, and poise — who tip the scales.

And if Scheyer’s instinct is right, Duke may have found one already.

“He’s someone teams won’t prepare for right away,” Scheyer said. “But he’s going to impact games. Maybe quietly. Maybe explosively. But it’s coming.”

Fans who have caught glimpses of recent practice footage have started to speculate, but one thing is certain: the Duke locker room has taken notice, too. Leadership, respect, and accountability all follow players who elevate others — and this young Blue Devil seems to be doing just that.

Scheyer may not believe in favorites, but when a player earns that kind of praise, it’s hard to stay silent. And if he’s truly the “secret weapon” Jon Scheyer claims, Duke might have more firepower than anyone expected this season.
