BREAKING NEWS: Netflix Drops Bombshell Announcement—“The Underdog,” a Highly Anticipated Documentary on Kentucky Legend Dan Issel, Mark Pope and Big Blue Nation React with Pride

In a move that has both sports fans and documentary lovers buzzing, Netflix has officially announced the release of its latest sports documentary: “The Underdog,” a powerful and deeply personal look at Kentucky Wildcats legend Dan Issel.

The film, which has been in quiet production for over a year, will debut globally on August 27th, and it’s already being hailed as one of the most anticipated college basketball documentaries of the decade.

Dan Issel, a name synonymous with Kentucky greatness, left an unforgettable legacy during his time in Lexington. Known for his gritty playing style, unmatched scoring ability, and relentless work ethic, Issel was the embodiment of the underdog spirit—a 6’9″ big man who never got the national attention he deserved, but who dominated every court he stepped on.

Now, decades after he last wore a Wildcats jersey, his story is finally getting the spotlight it deserves.

According to early reports, The Underdog will not only cover Issel’s record-breaking college career—including his 2,138 career points, which stood as a school record for decades—but will also delve deep into his personal life, professional journey, and post-basketball battles. Featuring interviews with former teammates, family members, NBA legends, and sports historians, the documentary promises an honest and emotionally resonant look at a man who gave everything to the game—and whose story has long been overlooked by the national media.

Perhaps one of the most touching elements of the announcement was the reaction from current Kentucky head coach Mark Pope, himself a former Wildcat. Pope, who has often spoken about the program’s tradition and the legends who paved the way, called Issel “the heart and soul of Kentucky basketball.”

“This is long overdue,” Pope said in a statement. “Dan Issel represents everything we want our players to strive for—toughness, humility, and a love for the game that can’t be measured in stats alone. I’ll be the first one watching when it premieres.”

The documentary’s release is being treated as a full-scale event in Lexington. The University of Kentucky has already announced plans to host a special screening at Rupp Arena on the night of the premiere, complete with appearances from Issel himself, Coach Pope, and a slate of former UK stars. Local fans, alumni, and even national media outlets are expected to descend on the event in what’s being called a “celebration of Kentucky basketball’s beating heart.”

Social media has already lit up with excitement. “Finally, Dan Issel getting his flowers,” one fan posted on X (formerly Twitter). Another wrote, “Can’t wait to cry and cheer through every minute of this. #BBN forever.”

As August 27th approaches, the anticipation continues to grow—not just for a documentary, but for the long-overdue recognition of one of college basketball’s greatest warriors. The Underdog promises to do more than tell a story—it’s set to cement a legacy.

So mark your calendars, Big Blue Nation. On August 27th, Netflix isn’t just releasing a documentary. They’re honoring a legend.
