WHY I DECLARED FOR THE NBA DRAFT!”

“WHY I DECLARED FOR THE NBA DRAFT!” — Kentucky Star Otega Oweh Opens Up, and His Reason Might Just Make You Laugh

In a college basketball world full of press releases and polished statements, Otega Oweh is keeping it refreshingly real. The Kentucky star guard recently opened up about his decision to declare for the 2025 NBA Draft — and while many expected a standard mix of ambition, legacy, and professional goals, Oweh’s explanation came with a twist that had fans smiling.

“I was sitting there after practice one day,” Oweh said during an interview this week, “eating cold cafeteria spaghetti and thinking, ‘Man, maybe it’s time to go pro just so I can afford decent food.’”

Yes, you read that right.

While his response sparked laughter across social media, the underlying message still carried weight. For Oweh, the decision to enter the NBA Draft was about more than just avoiding bad meals — it was about timing, growth, and taking advantage of a unique opportunity.

“Look, I’ve dreamed about the league since I was a kid,” he continued. “But this year, everything just started clicking — the rhythm, the confidence, the leadership. I felt like I’d done what I came to college to do. Now it’s time to take that next step.”

Oweh averaged 13.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.1 steals per game during his breakout season under Coach Mark Pope, showcasing elite athleticism and defensive tenacity that caught the attention of NBA scouts. His physical tools, combined with a rapidly improving offensive skillset, have landed him on multiple draft boards as a late first- or early second-round pick.

Still, Oweh admits the choice wasn’t entirely easy.

“There’s a part of me that wanted to stay, run it back with my guys, and try to win it all,” he said. “Kentucky is a special place. But I also knew that if I waited too long, I might miss my window. The league is getting younger every year. It’s now or never.”

He also gave a nod to the business side of the decision, joking: “I love the fans, I love Rupp Arena — but it wouldn’t hurt to stop playing for free chicken sandwiches and start playing for actual checks.”

Despite the humor, Oweh made it clear he’s grateful for his time in Lexington.

“This place changed my life,” he said. “The fans, the coaching staff, my teammates — they pushed me to be better every day. Now it’s time to show the world what I’ve got.”

As draft day approaches, one thing’s certain: Otega Oweh isn’t just chasing a dream — he’s doing it with heart, hustle, and a whole lot of personality.
