No True Duke Fan Will be in support of Dwight Howard’s Advice to Cooper Flagg

Fans Erupt After Dwight Howard Tells Cooper Flagg to ‘Stay in the Paint’ — Is He Stuck in the Past?

Dwight Howard has sparked controversy with his recent advice to Duke freshman and top NBA prospect Cooper Flagg — and fans aren’t holding back.

Speaking on a podcast, the former NBA star offered a blunt message: “Don’t fall in love with the three. Dominate the paint first.” Howard praised Flagg’s potential but insisted that true greatness starts near the rim, not the arc.

The reaction online was instant — and brutal. Fans quickly blasted Howard for giving what they called “outdated” advice in today’s pace-and-space NBA.

“This isn’t 2005,” one user tweeted. “The game has evolved, Dwight hasn’t.”

Another chimed in, “Telling Flagg to stay in the paint is like telling Steph Curry to stop shooting. Makes no sense.”

Flagg, known for his versatility, ball-handling, and outside shooting, has drawn comparisons to modern forwards like Jayson Tatum and Kevin Durant — players who thrive inside and out. Fans argue that limiting his game to the paint would hold him back.

Still, some backed Howard’s perspective. “The midrange and post are dying,” one user posted. “If Flagg can master that too, he’ll be unstoppable.” Others agreed, saying that Howard’s success in the league gives his advice some weight — even if it’s not popular.

As of now, Flagg hasn’t responded publicly. But sources close to him say he’s focused on developing all aspects of his game — shooting, defense, passing, and yes, his post play. He’s not ignoring advice, but he’s also not boxing himself into one style.

This isn’t the first time Dwight Howard has clashed with modern basketball trends. He’s made it clear he favors old-school, physical play over today’s perimeter-heavy style. To him, dominating inside is still the best path to success.

But Flagg is a different kind of player. He’s already being called a generational talent because of his versatility. Most scouts see his ability to stretch the floor as a major advantage — not something to tone down.

Bottom line: Dwight Howard’s advice sparked a major debate. Some say he’s offering tough love. Others say he’s stuck in the past. Either way, one thing is clear — Cooper Flagg has everyone talking, and he hasn’t even played an NCAA game yet.
