“WITHDRAWAL FROM NBA DRAFT”: Mark Pope Reveals Real Reason Otega Oweh Recommitted to Kentucky

“WITHDRAWAL FROM NBA DRAFT”: Mark Pope Reveals Real Reason Otega Oweh Recommitted to Kentucky — “It’s Not Just Love for the Program”

In a surprising twist that has energized Big Blue Nation, Kentucky guard Otega Oweh has officially withdrawn his name from the 2025 NBA Draft and announced his return to Lexington. While many assumed his decision was rooted in a deep love for the Kentucky program, head coach Mark Pope has now revealed that there’s more to the story — and it’s not just about loyalty.

Speaking candidly following Oweh’s announcement, Pope praised his guard’s maturity while shedding light on the true motivations behind the decision.

“Yes, Otega loves this program, but it wasn’t just about emotion,” Pope said. “He made this decision with purpose. He looked at the landscape, got feedback from NBA scouts, and ultimately chose to return because he’s hungry to grow, improve, and win — not just because he’s comfortable here.”

Oweh, who transferred from Oklahoma and quickly made an impact with his explosive athleticism and defensive tenacity, was viewed by some as a fringe second-round pick. But instead of taking the gamble, he opted to stay and elevate both his game and his draft stock.

In his statement, Oweh said, “Kentucky gave me the platform to be myself on and off the court. But after talking with my family, Coach Pope, and really evaluating everything, I knew I wasn’t done here. I’ve got more to prove — to myself, to my teammates, and to this program.”

Pope noted that Oweh’s return is more than just a roster boost — it’s a statement of intent.

“He’s got that fire,” Pope said. “He’s not satisfied. That’s the kind of guy you want to go to war with. He’s going to be a cornerstone for us this year.”

Oweh’s return solidifies Kentucky’s backcourt heading into the 2025 season and brings much-needed experience and grit. His ability to guard multiple positions, slash to the rim, and bring energy on both ends of the floor makes him one of the most valuable two-way players in the SEC.

Pope, in his first offseason at the helm of the Wildcats, continues to reshape the roster with a mix of transfers, returning players, and top-tier recruits. But Oweh’s return might be his most important win yet.

“This is a guy who could’ve chased the NBA right now,” Pope said. “But he chose to come back — not out of fear, but out of ambition. That says everything about who Otega Oweh is.”

With Oweh back in the fold, Kentucky’s outlook just got a whole lot brighter.
