The New England Patriots are eyeing a division rival to potentially fill their defensive coordinator role.
According to ESPN’s Mike Reiss, the Patriots have requested permission to interview Miami Dolphins outside linebackers coach Ryan Crow for the position.
Crow previously worked under Mike Vrabel with the Tennessee Titans from 2017 to 2023, starting as a defensive assistant before being promoted to outside linebackers coach for his final three seasons.
This past season, DeMarcus Covington served as the Patriots’ defensive coordinator under head coach Jerod Mayo. However, New England’s defense ranked 22nd in both points and yards allowed. While Covington has not been officially dismissed, his recent interview for the Cincinnati Bengals’ defensive coordinator role suggests he may not be part of Vrabel’s plans moving forward.
To move forward with the interview, the Patriots will need approval from the Dolphins. Typically, teams grant permission for such requests when the opportunity represents a significant career advancement.
In addition to seeking a defensive coordinator, Vrabel is also in the market for a new offensive coordinator.
He has reportedly considered Marcus Brady and Thomas Brown for the role, and it remains to be seen whether he will also pursue former Patriots coordinator Josh McDaniels.
Vrabel was officially announced as the Patriots’ new head coach just a week ago.
