The New England Patriots appear to have their long-term answer at quarterback. Drake Maye secured the starting role this season and proved himself worthy of the “franchise quarterback” label.
However, in the final game of the season, backup Joe Milton III showcased impressive potential as well.
Facing the Buffalo Bills, Milton completed 22 of 29 passes for 241 yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions. He also added 16 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground.
His strong performance has reportedly sparked trade interest from other teams, making him a potential trade candidate this offseason.
The Patriots could choose to retain Milton as Maye’s backup, but they might also consider moving him for draft capital. According to Jordy McElroy of Patriots Wire, New England could seek a second- or third-round pick in return.
“The Patriots invested a sixth-round pick in Milton, so a second or even third-round draft pick in return would be a major win for the team. Perhaps a team is even desperate enough to tack on one or two late-rounders in there as well,” McElroy wrote.
However, expecting such high compensation might be unrealistic given that Milton has only played in one game. While his performance was encouraging, a second- or third-round pick could be an overestimation. A more reasonable return might be a fourth- or fifth-round selection, though a team in need of a quarterback could potentially offer a third-rounder in desperation.
With significant cap space, strong draft assets, and a promising young core, the Patriots have plenty of options this offseason. The hiring of Mike Vrabel as head coach further enhances their rebuilding efforts.
Ultimately, whether New England trades Milton will depend on the offers they receive, but the most probable outcome is that he remains with the team as Maye’s primary backup next season.
