He’s an Attractive Candidate with Discipline, Patriots Insiders Leak Top Candidates Who is Considered more Fit for the Job

Less than a day after firing Jerod Mayo, the New England Patriots made one of only two interview requests for their now-vacant head coaching position, reaching out to Ben Johnson, the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions.

As one of the most sought-after candidates in this hiring cycle, Johnson has garnered significant attention. But what makes the 38-year-old such a standout prospect, and why might the Patriots consider him an ideal fit? Let’s explore his background and what a team under his leadership could look like.

Experience

Playing Career: Johnson began his football journey as a quarterback at A.C. Reynolds High School in Asheville, NC, leading his team to a 4-A state championship as a junior in 2002. He went on to play at the University of North Carolina from 2004 to 2007, serving as a backup quarterback and contributing on special teams. Graduating with a degree in mathematics and computer science, he initially pursued a career in software development but returned to football after a year.

Coaching Career: Johnson began coaching in 2009 at Boston College, joining former UNC offensive coordinator Gary Tranquill. He started as a graduate assistant under head coach Frank Spaziani and was promoted to tight ends coach in 2011, working with offensive coordinator Kevin Rogers.

In 2012, Johnson joined the Miami Dolphins under head coach Joe Philbin and offensive coordinator Mike Sherman. He initially served as an offensive coaching assistant before becoming the assistant quarterbacks coach in 2013. Johnson coached tight ends briefly in 2015 and transitioned to assistant wide receivers coach in 2016 under Adam Gase’s staff. By 2018, he was promoted to wide receivers coach, working with notable players like Danny Amendola and DeVante Parker.

In 2019, Johnson joined the Detroit Lions as an offensive quality control coach under head coach Matt Patricia. He later served as tight ends coach and was retained when Dan Campbell took over as head coach in 2021. Johnson’s breakthrough came in 2022 when Campbell promoted him to offensive coordinator, a position in which he has thrived. Under Johnson’s leadership, the Lions’ offense has ranked first in points per game and EPA per play over the last three seasons.

Why the Patriots Might Be Interested

Johnson’s appeal lies in his collaborative approach and innovative offensive strategies. His ability to engage with players, such as involving offensive linemen in game-planning or tailoring the offense to quarterback Jared Goff’s strengths, demonstrates his adaptability and attention to detail. While Johnson has yet to work extensively with a young quarterback, his ability to foster collaboration and precision could make him an excellent fit for the Patriots, particularly if they bring in a talented young signal-caller like Drake Maye.

Leadership Style and Personality

Johnson is known for his energetic and detail-oriented approach. On the practice field, he is vocal and demanding but remains respectful, holding his players to high standards. Off the field, he is engaging, humorous, and thoughtful in his interactions, further endearing him to players and staff.

If hired, Johnson could bring a disciplined, innovative, and player-focused approach to New England, making him a compelling candidate for the job.
