When considering the ideal backup quarterback, the focus is often on someone who is reliable, consistent, and capable of stepping in to deliver a steady, error-free performance over four quarters. Unfortunately, the Cleveland Browns’ 2024 quarterback group didn’t provide such reassurance. The closest was Jameis Winston, who ultimately struggled with turnovers and failed to inspire confidence during long offensive drives late in the season.
As a result, the Browns face a complete overhaul of their quarterback room for 2025. This means not only finding a new starter but also acquiring dependable backups through free agency or the draft. One of the best backup options for Cleveland to target this offseason is Tyler Huntley.
Why Tyler Huntley Fits the Browns’ Backup Needs in 2025
Huntley is a compelling choice, partly because of his previous stint with the Browns in 2024 before being waived and picked up by the Miami Dolphins. When called upon in Miami, Huntley demonstrated his capability, particularly after Tua Tagovailoa suffered a season-ending injury.
In Week 17 against the Browns, Huntley delivered his best performance of the season, throwing for 225 yards and a touchdown. While it’s possible he was motivated by facing the team that cut him, his performance underscored his potential. At just 26 years old, Huntley brings more experience than Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who struggled in his two seasons with the Browns.
Throughout the season, Huntley stepped in as needed for Miami, proving he can be a competent backup. Ideally, Cleveland wouldn’t need to rely on him heavily, unless they are in a rebuilding phase or resting starters. His prior experience with the Browns system, even under the now-departed offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey, gives him a foundation to build upon. Working with head coach Kevin Stefanski, who seems to be returning to a run-focused offense with occasional deep throws, would further ease his transition.
Bringing Huntley back to Cleveland makes sense. His familiarity with the organization, coupled with his ability to provide stability and occasional flashes of brilliance, puts him far ahead of the Browns’ 2024 backup options.
