For decades, the Green Bay Packers have enjoyed stability at the quarterback position, transitioning seamlessly from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers and now to Jordan Love, who is currently leading the team in their playoff pursuit.
However, that transition hasn’t always been smooth. Favre was famously distant with Rodgers during their overlap, and the shift to Love was also fraught with tension, as the team used a first-round pick on him while still in contention with Rodgers at the helm. Despite these challenges, all three quarterbacks embody excellence at the position and share a unique bond as part of the Packers’ storied legacy.
During a recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Rodgers reflected on his time with the Packers and Love’s 2024 season. Rodgers shared that he enjoyed mentoring Love and passing on lessons he had learned from Favre.
“For the first two years he (Jordan Love) was with us, he got to watch every week,” Rodgers said. “I didn’t turn the ball over much in ’20 or ’21, but I watched Favre, and Favre turned it over a decent amount, especially in ’05 and ’06. I realized how important my longevity would be tied to taking care of the football, so that became a big focus for me. I even went through a stretch where I had too many fumbles and had to clean that up. For most of my career, I’ve been good at limiting interceptions.”
Rodgers also commented on Love’s resilience, saying, “He’s had some tough stretches—injuries like that ridiculous one against Philly, plus groin or hamstring issues. He’s similar to me when I was younger, able to make plays both in and out of the pocket.
When your legs aren’t right, it affects your throws, but overall, he’s had another really solid season. I love watching him. He’s accurate, makes good decisions, and plays at a high level.”
While Rodgers is technically still active with the Jets, his media appearances offer insight into his perspective as he reflects on his career.
Though his departure from Green Bay was complicated, Rodgers will undoubtedly enter the Hall of Fame as a Packer, have his jersey retired, and remain a celebrated figure in franchise history.
Regardless of his initial feelings about Love’s selection, their connection is now part of the Packers’ legacy, making Rodgers’ praise all the more meaningful.
