Quarterback Bailey Zappe is set to seek a new opportunity as the Cleveland Browns announced his release on Monday.
The team made the move to promote defensive tackle Jowon Briggs from the practice squad to the active roster.
Zappe, 25, was originally drafted by the New England Patriots in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft (No. 137 overall).
The former C-USA MVP quickly gained popularity in New England, stepping in as a starter during the 2022 and 2023 seasons and achieving a 4-4 record in those games.
However, the Patriots moved on this year, drafting Drake Maye with the No. 3 overall pick and signing veteran Jacoby Brissett, which led to Zappe being waived in August.
After a brief stint on the Kansas City Chiefs’ practice squad, Zappe joined the Browns. Even with Deshaun Watson sidelined by injury,
Zappe remained low on the depth chart behind Jameis Winston and rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson, limiting his chances to contribute.
Now on waivers, Zappe awaits the possibility of being claimed by another team or entering free agency to continue his NFL journey.
