The Cleveland Browns are facing a tricky financial situation heading into 2025, with a significant portion of that tied to Deshaun Watson’s $72.9 million cap hit. However, other factors contribute to the Browns’ financial strain as well.
One of the major concerns is offensive tackle Jack Conklin’s expensive contract. Conklin is set to earn $14 million in base salary next season, with a $19.5 million cap hit. Given his struggles with staying healthy since joining the team in 2020, this is far from ideal for the Browns.
As a result, Zac Jackson of The Athletic expects Cleveland to either restructure Conklin’s contract or release him with a post-June 1 designation, which would free up approximately $16 million in cap space.
When Conklin first signed with the Browns in 2020, he was expected to be a key player in the offensive line and earned a First-Team All-Pro selection in his first year. However, the 30-year-old has struggled with injuries, appearing in just 28 games over the past four seasons.
Conklin tore his ACL in Week 1 last year and missed the first five games of the 2024 season as a result.
While Conklin remains effective when healthy, the Browns may now prioritize durability and stability over his potential when making future decisions.
