The New England Patriots have several priorities for the upcoming NFL offseason, but none are more pressing than securing a true No. 1 wide receiver to support quarterback Drake Maye.
It appears the Patriots have found their next franchise quarterback in Maye, who looks ready to lead the team for the long term. However, to maximize his potential, they need to bolster the talent around him.
Currently, New England’s roster lacks a wide receiver capable of serving as a reliable top target. Although they’ve invested in drafting wideouts in recent years, those efforts haven’t yielded the desired results. With that in mind, here are three potential solutions to address this critical need during the offseason:
Stefon Diggs
One intriguing but under-discussed option is Houston Texans wide receiver Stefon Diggs. Despite his 2024 season being cut short by a torn ACL, Diggs could be a valuable addition for the Patriots in free agency.
Before his injury, Diggs appeared in eight games, recording 47 catches for 496 yards and three touchdowns. His previous tenure with the Buffalo Bills showcased him as one of the league’s most dynamic receivers.
While Diggs will turn 31 soon, the Patriots should explore what it would take to bring him on board.
Tee Higgins
Another logical target in free agency is Tee Higgins. Widely expected to part ways with the Cincinnati Bengals, Higgins has already been linked to the Patriots on multiple occasions.
The 25-year-old has had a strong season, posting 38 receptions for 489 yards and four touchdowns in just six games. Still young and with star potential, Higgins could elevate the Patriots’ offense significantly.
Travis Hunter
Finally, a bold and exciting option could be targeting Colorado Buffaloes standout Travis Hunter in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Hunter is widely considered a candidate for the No. 1 overall pick, while the Patriots are projected to select fifth overall.
If they miss out on the top pick, New England should consider trading up aggressively to secure him.
Pairing Maye with Hunter could provide the Patriots with a dynamic duo for years to come. If Hunter reaches his potential, he has the talent to become a top-three NFL wide receiver within a few seasons.
