Currently, the Patriots’ offense has two significant areas in need of improvement. Strengthening the offensive line is a top priority to ensure Maye gets the protection and time he needs to make plays.
Additionally, upgrading the wide receiver position by adding a true No. 1 target should be high on the team’s list.
One intriguing option for the Patriots in the upcoming NFL free agency is Buffalo Bills wide receiver Amari Cooper. Despite being slightly older than other potential targets, Cooper remains a reliable and productive top-tier receiver. Bleacher Report has suggested that New England pursue him, emphasizing the value he could bring to both the offense and the young quarterback’s development.
“The Patriots already have some promising young weapons for Drake Maye. While it’s beneficial to have pass-catchers who can grow with the quarterback, a veteran presence like Cooper could provide leadership and consistent No. 1 receiver production.
This was evident in why the Bills traded for him at the deadline. With significant cap space available, New England could offer a competitive deal to lure him away from their division rival,” Bleacher Report noted.
Although Cooper has had a somewhat underwhelming 2024 season due to injuries and prior challenges with the Cleveland Browns, his potential remains clear. Through Week 11, he has recorded 31 catches for 374 yards and three touchdowns in nine games between the Bills and Browns.
As Cooper approaches his 31st birthday, the Patriots should consider offering him a two- or three-year contract.
His presence would not only provide Maye with a reliable No. 1 receiver but also add valuable veteran leadership to mentor the team’s young wideouts. While Cooper may not be the Patriots’ primary free agency target, his fit within the team’s rebuild is compelling and worth exploring.
