Just in: Patriots part ways with 2022 second-round pick while Patriots will welcome back one of their defensive leaders for Week 11.

The New England Patriots plan to waive wide receiver Tyquan Thornton on Saturday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Thornton, 24, was drafted in the second round (50th overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft, envisioned as the team’s primary deep threat. The Baylor standout impressed scouts with his speed, clocking a 4.28-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, one of the fastest times recorded. Despite the hype, Thornton’s rookie season fell short of expectations. A fractured clavicle during the 2023 preseason sidelined him early, and upon his October return from injured reserve, his role had significantly diminished.

In 28 career games, Thornton has recorded 39 receptions for 385 yards and two touchdowns, averaging just 9.9 yards per catch. After being inactive for five consecutive games, he has dropped to the bottom of New England’s depth chart. The Patriots, facing roster needs at other positions, decided now was the time to part ways. His release will result in a $1.3 million dead cap hit.

Meanwhile, the Patriots are set to activate defensive lineman Christian Barmore off the non-football illness (NFI) list in time for Week 11, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Barmore, 25, had been sidelined indefinitely since July due to blood clots but has made significant progress. After returning to practice earlier this week, he is expected to play on Sunday.

Barmore had a breakout 2023 season, posting career highs in sacks (8.5), tackles (64), pressures (19), and tackles for loss (13). In recognition of his performance, the Patriots extended his contract this past spring with a four-year, $84 million deal.

Although New England’s pass rush and run defense have been average this season, Barmore’s return could provide a boost. While the Patriots are not contending for much this year, the team hopes to see further growth from the defensive lineman as they approach the offseason.
