The New England Patriots surprisingly stayed quiet at the NFL trade deadline, though they were active in trade discussions.
Dianna Russini from The Athletic reported that the team received inquiries for defensive lineman Davon Godchaux, safety Kyle Dugger, and wide receivers Kendrick Bourne and K.J. Osborn, but ultimately, no deals were reached.
Their only trade this season was sending edge rusher Josh Uche to the Kansas City Chiefs late last month, which stands out as the Patriots were expected to sell more players by the Nov. 5 deadline.
With a disappointing 2-7 record, the Patriots aren’t in playoff contention, so their lack of major trades is unexpected. It’s possible New England didn’t receive enticing offers, but their reluctance to move anyone (aside from Uche) is puzzling.
Many thought the Patriots would at least trade Bourne or Osborn, and cornerback Jonathan Jones was frequently mentioned in trade rumors, especially given his age (31) and his expiring contract.
There was also speculation that New England might add talent to support Drake Maye, possibly by bringing in more offensive weapons or improving the offensive line. Instead, the Patriots chose to hold onto all their assets.
Time will tell if this decision backfires, though it’s certain the Foxborough fans won’t be thrilled.
