The Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly finalizing a last-minute trade just before the NFL’s trade deadline.
After weeks of rumors and speculation about potential moves, the deadline is finally upon us, and the Packers and Steelers have agreed on a deal. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Green Bay is sending star defensive end Preston Smith, who is signed to a $52 million contract, to the Steelers.
Schefter confirmed the move, stating, “Trade: Packers are trading edge rusher Preston Smith to the Pittsburgh Steelers, per sources.”
This trade comes as a bit of a surprise. Smith has played in nine games this season, recording 2.5 sacks and 19 tackles. While his numbers are down compared to previous years—having posted eight or more sacks in each of the past three seasons—he still has the potential to bounce back and make an impact.
While Green Bay remains in playoff contention, it’s unexpected to see them trade away a key defender like Smith, especially given his past performance. Smith, who signed a four-year, $52 million deal, still has two years left on his contract after the 2024 season. He joined the Packers in 2019, but now his time with the team is coming to an end.
