The Packers announced on Tuesday that they have added former first-round pick Jamin Davis to their practice squad.
Originally drafted by the Commanders with the 19th pick in 2021, Davis struggled to meet expectations in Washington.
He became a starter midway through his rookie season after Cole Holcomb’s injury and retained the role through 2022 and 2023, although both seasons ended with him on injured reserve.
Davis led the Commanders with 104 tackles in 2022, but he only appeared in 13 games in 2023 before the team declined his fifth-year option.
Under Washington’s new management in 2024, Davis switched to defensive end and secured a spot on the 53-man roster, appearing in five games with 13 tackles and a 30% snap share on defense. Washington waived him on October 22, and he went unclaimed, becoming a free agent.
With a deep, healthy defensive line, the Packers likely won’t need Davis in action immediately. Instead, he’ll have an opportunity to study the playbook and improve his skills as a defensive end behind seasoned players Rashan Gary and Preston Smith.
To make room, the Packers released linebacker Chris Russell from the practice squad. The undrafted rookie had not played in any games for Green Bay this season.
