The Detroit Lions are emerging as one of the NFL’s top teams, holding a 5-1 record and leading the NFC North after six games.
They recently secured a notable road win over the Minnesota Vikings in Week 7 and will face the Tennessee Titans at Ford Field in Week 8.
However, while they are among the NFC’s elite, there are clear weaknesses on their roster, particularly in pass rushing. Injuries have hit this area hard, with edge rushers Aidan Hutchinson and Marcus Davenport both out for the season, leaving limited depth behind them.
If the Lions aim to compete for a championship in 2024, they will need to make a strong move at the trade deadline to bring in a quality pass rusher.
With Detroit’s pass-rushing unit lacking both top-tier talent and production, Athlon Sports’ Chris Licata suggests a trade that would send Los Angeles Chargers edge rusher Khalil Mack to Detroit in exchange for a 2025 fourth- and seventh-round pick.
Although Mack, at 33, is nearing the end of his career, the eight-time Pro Bowler remains a highly productive player, posting a career-high 17 sacks and 88 quarterback pressures in 2023. He’s also been very durable, last missing a game in 2021.
In six games this season, the three-time All-Pro has recorded 2.5 sacks and 22 quarterback pressures, with a 92.0 PFF Grade. Despite a dip in sack numbers, Mack continues to be a reliable and effective pass rusher with strong run-stopping skills.
The trade’s price of a fourth- and seventh-round pick is reasonable, though not without risk. Mack will become an unrestricted free agent this offseason and may seek one final lucrative contract before retiring.
With the Nov. 5 trade deadline approaching, the Lions need to address their edge-rusher shortage. Though Mack may not be performing at an All-Pro level, his experience and no long-term financial obligation make him a solid choice.
General manager Brad Holmes should consider making this move to bring the potential future Hall of Famer to Detroit.
