The Browns are still waiting for a standout performance from Deshaun Watson but managed to pull through and weather the conditions in Jacksonville.
Their strategy involved relying heavily on their other offensive players while Watson struggled. Despite facing a tough Jaguars defense, the Browns managed to get by, which could be a viable approach if Watson continues to underperform.
A significant factor in the victory was the improvement in the run game. Unlike the previous game against the Dallas Cowboys, where the running game was ineffective, the Browns’ backs Jerome Ford and Dont’a Foreman contributed significantly with 106 yards on 21 carries, and Watson added a rushing touchdown. With the passing game averaging only 5.5 yards per attempt, the Browns may need to continue focusing on the run game for scoring opportunities.
Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski acknowledged the team’s effort, stating that while it wasn’t always pretty, a commitment to improvement was crucial. The defense also played a key role, demonstrating their elite status by limiting Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars to just 13 points. The Browns’ defense, particularly Myles Garrett and the defensive line, applied consistent pressure on Lawrence and contributed to a strong defensive performance.
Garrett noted the need for overall improvement but praised the defense’s red-zone performance. With four sacks and a completion rate under 50% for Lawrence, the Browns’ defense showed it could dominate, possibly recovering from any fatigue from their previous game against the Cowboys. The special teams also contributed, with a key punt leading to a safety.
Jacksonville’s mistakes provided opportunities for the Browns, who are managing a significant investment in their quarterback. With offensive tackles Jedrick Wills and Jack Conklin potentially returning, the offense might improve, but it remains uncertain.
