In their Week 1 victory over the Los Angeles Rams, the Detroit Lions showcased an impressive pass rush, recording two sacks and 23 pressures.
Aidan Hutchinson accounted for 11 of those pressures, while Marcus Davenport and Levi Onwuzurike contributed six and five, respectively.
Davenport’s performance in his debut was exactly what the Lions hoped for when they signed him in the offseason. However, concerns about his injury history are proving valid, as he will miss the Week 2 game due to a groin injury, which has him listed as doubtful.
This situation underscores the need for the Lions to continue exploring options to strengthen their edge rush.
One potential addition is Haason Reddick of the New York Jets. Despite the Jets’ public stance of not wanting to trade Reddick, who is seeking a new contract, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that many league executives believe a trade could eventually happen.
The 33rd Team recently listed potential destinations for Reddick, including the Lions, along with the Chicago Bears, Tennessee Titans, and Indianapolis Colts. Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox also suggests that Detroit could pursue Reddick if he becomes available.
Reddick has been a consistently productive pass rusher over the past four years, recording at least 11 sacks each season. Adding him would provide a significant boost to Detroit’s pass rush.
As the Lions aim for a Super Bowl this season, acquiring Reddick would be a strategic move for general manager Brad Holmes. While the Lions would need to negotiate a deal with Reddick, his proven performance and impending 30th birthday make a multi-year contract a manageable risk.
Moreover, with $77.5 million in projected cap space for 2025, the Lions can afford such an investment.
