Packers $67 million offseason acquisition named to “All-Overpaid Team”

As fall approaches, the Green Bay Packers are once again set to dominate conversations throughout Wisconsin. Following a strong finish to the 2023 season, the Packers aim to be among the top contenders in the NFL for 2024. With Jordan Love established as their franchise quarterback, they hope that the team surrounding him can deliver another Super Bowl victory.

To capitalize on their championship window, the Packers made significant investments during the offseason. They signed Love to a $220 million extension and bolstered their defense by acquiring safety Xavier McKinney, formerly with the New York Giants, on a $67 million contract. This move sparked some controversy, with one news outlet questioning the decision.

On Thursday, McKinney was featured on Bleacher Report’s NFL “All-Overpaid Team,” selected by Ryan Fowler, where he was named the “runner-up” in the safety category behind Justin Reid of the Kansas City Chiefs. Fowler noted that McKinney, the Packers’ marquee free agent signing of 2024, faces high expectations. His health will be crucial, as injuries limited him to just six games in his rookie season and nine in 2022.

The Packers are relying on the 26-year-old McKinney to stay healthy and lead a safety unit that includes two rookies: Javon Bullard, drafted in the second round from Georgia, and Evan Williams, selected in the fourth round from Oregon. With a $16.8 million annual salary, McKinney will be the NFL’s fourth-highest-paid safety this season. While his nine interceptions over 49 games demonstrate his potential, he must prove his value on the field.

Regardless of the “overpaid” label, McKinney could be a key asset to the Packers’ defense if he stays healthy. With the championship window open, strong performances from top defenders like McKinney will be essential for the team to claim a title.
