Bill Belichick once threatened to fine a Patriots rookie who ‘loved to talk to the media’
When it was announced that they would not be bringing back long-serving head coach bill Belichick, the new england patriots sent shockwaves through the NFL this season.
During his time in new england, Belichick guided the patriots to six super bowl victories, but the team struggled to produce consistently victories in the last few years, leaving robert kraft and his organization with a void that was soon filled by new patriots head coach jerod mayo.
Bill Belichick was known to be a bit tactless with the media during his press conferences, and it seemed that this had a ripple effect on the players as well. Adam vinatieri, a former patriots kicker, appeared on ESPN’s the pat mcafee show to give an example.
“I watched bill belichick tell matt light, and again i’m giving a little bit of information, but matt was a rookie and he loved to talk to the media,” vinatieri said. “well, he loved to talk to the media, and i remember belichick saying, ‘hey matt, i don’t want to hear any more f’n words from you to the media.’
Here’s the deal: if i hear another statement from you to the media, i’m going to fine you,’ he says, “and the media is in his locker, and guys are laughing because they’re asking him questions, and he’s just sitting here, and he’s actually not saying a word.” although matt light’s lesson may have been humiliating, he’s learned it.
