The Washington Cardinals may have turned down the opportunity to hire former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick to lead the team in 2024. But they’re still giving new coach Dan Quinn a piece of the Patriot road.
The Chiefs are set to hire former Patriots special teamer Larry Izzo as their new special teams coordinator, according to The Athletic. Izzo most recently held the same position with the Seattle Seahawks under former Pats head coach Pete Carroll. Izzo entered the NFL as a free agent with the Miami Dolphins in 1996, but his professional career began when he signed with the Patriots in 2001.
The Rice University product played on three of the Patriots’ six Super Bowl championship teams. 2001, 2003, respectively 2004), in St. victories over St. Louis Rams, Carolina
Panthers and Philadelphia Eagles. Izzo was also a member of the 2007 Patriots, the only team to go undefeated in the regular season since the NFL expanded to a 16-game schedule. In nine seasons in New England, Izzo was a three-time Pro Bowler and a first-team All Pro selection as a special teamer in 2004. He was also selected as a member of the franchise’s All-Dynasty Team and All-Dynasty Team.
Izzo’s coaching career began in 2011 when he joined the New York Giants as an assistant special teams coach. Ironically, his third-round pick by the Giants allowed this unit to play a key role in their Super Bowl XLVI victory over the Patriots. Izzo won his first championship ring as a coach and finished fourth overall.
The 49-year-old joins the Seahawks after two seasons as special teams coordinator with the Houston Texans and is their 2020 tight ends coach.
