New England bolsters offensive leadership with key hiresThe Patriots have officially hired Alex Van Pelt as the team’s next offensive coordinator, according to Tom Pelissero. Van Pelt was a quarterback and respected assistant coach for many years. He finished four seasons as OC with the Browns. Van Pelt will look to help revitalize New England’s offense after a lackluster performance in 2023-24. The Patriots finished the season 4-13.
The franchise said goodbye to longtime head coach Bill Belichick. Meanwhile, former offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien soon left for the Ohio State Buckeyes.Alex Van Pelt has a tough task ahead of him, but the Patriots have the tools to run a productive offense. Third-year quarterback Mac Jones has the potential to improve the team’s offense. The 25-year-old threw for 2,120 yards, 10 touchdowns and had a 36.6 QBR during the regular season.
Van Pelt could take the young QB to the next level in his fourth season with New England. With the third pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Patriots could decide to go in a different direction at quarterback as well.
Regardless, Van Pelt has an exciting opportunity to work with Jerod Mayo and help New England become competitive again.
