It’s unusual to see the new england patriots pick inside the top-10 of an NFL draft, much less as a top-three pick. The fact that they’re sitting at no. 1 is a sign that they’re doing it wrong. The fact that three players are selected in the 2024 nfl draft is a feat in itself.
The patriots will need to make the most of this opportunity as it arises, and they’ll need to make the most of it. Some will argue that they play it safe by trading down, accumulating more draft picks, and building up their offensive roster, before really addressing the quarterback issue. At no. 1, they could add a receiver or even an offensive tackle. Overall, 3 players will be handed over to bailey zappe, mac jones, or another veteran option. They could also choose to fully exploit their position by transferring up to draft the quarterback of their choice. There would be no leaving it up to chance. They may be in a good spot to pick the top pick on the draft board. Here are five reasons why the patriots should trade up to the no. 1 quarterback. Pick the 1st overall pick and give them their quarterback of the future, jeremy jones.
There is no guarantee that they’ll have another chance at a potential franchise.
qbit is a challenge to find exceptional talent at the quarterback position in the nfl. Teams spend years rotating through sluggish draft picks, over-the-hill veterans, and bridge options under center, while the teams led by the best quarterbacks consistently compete for championships. In the 19 years they had tom brady as quarterback, the patriots saw it firsthand. With brady out, they’ve been thrust into the same endless hunt that so many other teams have had over the years. There are no guarantees that they will be in a position to draft as high as no. 3 times more. If they had chosen to stick bailey zappe over mac jones for the entire season, they might not have been in that position this season. It’s also highly unlikely that a franchise quarterback will ever be free. Even when things go wrong, teams stick to their quarterbacks, fearing that the result could be much worse. The patriots are in a unique position to step up and draft either caleb williams or drake maye. Both are likely to be gone before the no. 1 seed. 3 choices. Jayden daniels is most likely the next quarterback for the packers if they truly value him as their quarterback. But, if williams and maye seem to be better candidates when analyzing a film, why not move up and get their guy?
Another team could beat them to the punch.
the patriots’ only reason to roll the dice is because someone else could beat them to the punch. There are a slew of other quarterback-needy teams that could consider scaling the draft board in an attempt to sign caleb williams, drake maye, or jayden daniels. The atlanta falcons, minnesota vikings, denver broncos, and las vegas raiders could all use a major rebuild under center. Only time will tell if the need is strong enough for any of those teams to unload the arsenal of draft picks they would need to make it a reality. But how disappointing would it be for the patriots to sit pat or even trade out of their top spot for a new team to step up and get their franchise quarterback? Taking risks reaps huge rewards, and the patriots will have to get comfortable with that reality at some point. The heavens aren’t going to open for an elite quarterback to slip into their lap.
Mac jones and bailey zappe aren’t the answer.
in 2023, jones threw more interceptions than touchdowns, and the offense looked dead in the water with him under center. With bill belichick no longer leading the show, i get the wish that jones would suddenly morph into a franchise quarterback, but a regime change won’t necessarily improve jones’ throws’ speed and accuracy. Jones didn’t do him any favors by his shockingly poor roster choices, but it’s also important to note that jones wasn’t entirely helpless in the situation. Down the stretch, zappe completely outplayed him. That’s the same zappe who threw zero touchdown passes and five interceptions in the last two games of the season.
