Liverpool missed the chance to get closer to Manchester City as Luton Town were held to a 1-1 draw.
Jamie Carragher says Liverpool will not challenge for the Premier League title this year and must strengthen his squad in two areas. Manchester United missed the chance to overtake leaders Manchester City when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Luton Town on Sunday. Jurgen Klopp’s side were not at their best at Kenilworth Road and only Luis Diaz’s stoppage time goal saved them from a humiliating defeat. Carragher still believes Liverpool need a new defensive midfielder, but Alex McAllister has filled that role this season. This is despite the team finishing fifth last season and undergoing major changes in the summer transfer window.
The Kop legend believes the Reds must first sign a full-back if they are to challenge City again for the Premier League title.
“They dominated a lot of possession for a long time but people always think about Liverpool and the way they press forward,” Carragher told Sky Sports. They don’t have as much possession as Manchester City, so they tend to have more turnovers when they lose the ball and opponents seem to find space to attack. Apart from the late goal, Luton lacked the quality to do any real damage. Liverpool’s midfield is much better than last season, but they still lack a quality midfielder.
Mac Allister is good on the ball but struggles defensively and lacks speed for his position. He can still improve in this area. “Liverpool can employ good defenders who can play different positions in defence, rather than players who play in specific roles. I think [Joe] Gomes is stronger in defense when he starts on the left instead of [Costas] Tsimikas.
I still think Liverpool could play a right-back, giving Trent Alexander-Arnold the freedom to play as a midfielder or strong defensive player against tough opposition.”Liverpool is not ready to win the league yet. At this point, the fans and Jurgen Klopp will know. If they want to compete for the top four again, they need another midfielder and a top defense.
