“Too Good for a Video Game” — Reece Potter Says This Kentucky Team Is Stacked with 99-Rated Talent, Jokes Roster Would Be Banned for Being Too Dominant

LEXINGTON, KY — August 4, 2025

Reece Potter didn’t mince words when asked about the potential of this year’s Kentucky basketball roster — and he certainly didn’t hold back on confidence, either. Speaking after an intense summer workout, the sophomore big man offered a bold (and slightly tongue-in-cheek) take on just how loaded the Wildcats are heading into the new season.

“If this team was in a video game,” Potter grinned, “they’d ban us. Everyone would have 99 ratings. It wouldn’t even be fair.”

While his comments drew laughs, there was a layer of truth that Kentucky fans — and opposing teams — can’t ignore. From top to bottom, this year’s roster looks every bit like a team built to dominate. The balance, the depth, the athleticism — it’s all there. And with players already pushing each other in offseason workouts, the hype is quickly becoming something real.

Potter’s confidence stems not just from the names on the roster, but from what he’s seen behind closed doors. The intensity in practices. The competitiveness in drills. The way no one — no matter how highly ranked — is coasting.

“This isn’t just talent on paper,” he said. “Guys are locked in. You’ve got shooters, defenders, rim protectors, passers — and we’re all unselfish. That’s the scary part. It’s not just stars trying to get theirs. It’s everyone trying to win.”

The Wildcats come into the season with one of the most talked-about recruiting classes in the country, mixed with returning veterans who understand the expectations that come with wearing Kentucky blue. From dynamic freshmen with NBA potential to experienced role players ready to step up, the pieces are in place for a special run.

But with high expectations come serious questions: Can all that talent mesh? Will the minutes be enough for everyone? Can egos stay in check when roles become defined?

Potter believes the answer is yes — and then some.

“People talk about too much talent being a problem,” he said. “But we see it as an advantage. Iron sharpens iron. Every day in practice, you’re battling someone just as good as you — or better. That builds toughness. That builds chemistry.”

Head Coach Mark Pope has echoed similar sentiments throughout the offseason, noting that this group is different. Less flash, more fight. Less talk, more work.

“You look at these guys,” Pope said last week, “and you see hunger. Nobody here thinks anything is guaranteed. That’s the kind of energy we need.”

Still, with powerhouses like Duke, Kansas, and UConn also reloading, the road to the top won’t be easy. But if Potter’s outlook is any indication, the Wildcats are ready to meet the moment — and maybe even overwhelm it.

“We’re not just trying to win,” Potter said. “We want to dominate. We want teams to look across at us and know they’re in trouble before the ball is even tipped.”

Whether they live up to that sky-high potential remains to be seen — but one thing’s certain:

If this Kentucky team was in a video game, opponents would be reaching for the reset button.
