Cory Alexander’s Bold Advice to Otega Oweh Sparks Heated Debate Among Fans and Analysts

In a move that’s sent shockwaves through the college basketball community, former NBA player and current ESPN analyst Cory Alexander has publicly advised Kentucky Wildcats star Otega Oweh to forgo the 2025 NBA Draft and return to college for another season. Alexander’s recommendation has ignited a fervent debate among fans, analysts, and insiders about the best path forward for the standout guard.

Oweh, who transferred from Oklahoma to Kentucky, had a breakout junior season, averaging 16 points and five rebounds per game. His performance was pivotal in the Wildcats’ run to the Sweet 16, especially after a key injury to teammate Jaxson Robinson. Despite his impressive stats, Oweh’s name has been notably absent from recent NBA mock drafts, with ESPN’s latest projections not listing him among the 59 picks.

At the NBA Draft Combine, Oweh showcased his skills, delivering a strong all-around performance in scrimmages. However, he has expressed that he is seeking a first-round guarantee to remain in the draft. Without such assurance, he is open to returning to Kentucky, where he could further develop his game and potentially improve his draft stock for the 2026 NBA Draft.

Alexander’s advice underscores the potential benefits of another collegiate season for Oweh. With areas like three-point shooting and playmaking identified for improvement, a return could position him as a top contender in next year’s draft. Moreover, the evolving landscape of college athletics, particularly with Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities, offers financial incentives that rival some second-round NBA contracts.

Kentucky head coach Mark Pope has expressed support for Oweh’s decision-making process, emphasizing the player’s importance to the team’s future. Should Oweh choose to return, he would not only bolster the Wildcats’ roster but also serve as a veteran leader for incoming talent.

As the May 28 withdrawal deadline approaches, all eyes are on Oweh. His decision will not only impact his personal career trajectory but also shape the competitive landscape of college basketball in the upcoming season.
