“They Both Can’t Leave”: Head Coach Mark Pope Finally Convinces Kentucky Star to Stay — One More Year With a Purpose

In a dramatic turn of events that has electrified the Big Blue Nation, Kentucky head coach Mark Pope has pulled off what many thought was impossible — convincing one of his top NBA prospects to delay professional dreams and give the Wildcats just one more year.

Following a wave of early draft declarations, including standout guard Otega Oweh, Kentucky fans braced for the possibility of losing multiple key contributors. But in a passionate, behind-the-scenes push, Pope made his message clear: “They both can’t leave. Not yet.”

While Oweh remains committed to testing the NBA waters, sources confirm that Jaxson Robinson — the sharpshooting wing who was widely expected to stay in the draft — is now seriously considering a return to Lexington. And according to those close to the program, Pope is the reason why.

Pope laid out three major reasons for Robinson’s possible return during a private meeting that reportedly lasted over two hours.

1. Unfinished Business:

Pope emphasized that Kentucky’s early tournament exit last season left a bitter taste, not just for fans, but for the players themselves. “We have a chance to make history,” Pope said. “This isn’t about running it back — it’s about finishing what we started.”

2. Elevated Role and Development:

Pope offered a clear vision for Robinson’s development, positioning him as the offensive focal point for the upcoming season. With increased usage and freedom on the floor, Robinson could boost both his draft stock and legacy at Kentucky. “You’re not just a player here — you’re the player,” Pope reportedly told him.

3. NIL Impact and Leadership Opportunity:

In the new era of college basketball, Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals matter — and Pope has been strategic. Robinson is expected to receive significant NIL backing should he return, but more than the money, Pope pitched leadership. “This is your team. Be the leader. Be the legacy.”

Midway through the conversation, the mention of Oweh came up again. Pope didn’t mince words: “Otega’s got a path — but if you both go, who picks up the torch?” It was a challenge, not a plea. And Robinson, by all indications, heard it loud and clear.

Though no official announcement has been made, momentum is building. Kentucky insiders say Robinson is leaning heavily toward returning, and Pope has been preparing offseason workouts with Robinson’s role in mind.

If the Wildcats get Jaxson Robinson back, paired with new transfers and incoming recruits, the 2025 season could be one for the books.

One thing is certain — Mark Pope is building more than a roster. He’s building belief.
