HEAD COACH BREAKS SILENCE: Scheyer Speaks Out on Duke’s Roster and Cooper Flagg’s Draft Decision

Duke head coach Jon Scheyer has finally broken his silence following Cooper Flagg’s official decision to declare for the 2025 NBA Draft.

In a heartfelt message, Scheyer addressed the future of Duke’s roster and offered his thoughts on the departure of one of the most hyped prospects in recent college basketball history.

“Cooper Flagg gave this program everything he had,” Scheyer said. “He’s a special talent, and while we’re sad to see him go, we’re incredibly proud of him. This is what Duke is about — preparing players for the next level and helping them achieve their dreams.”

Flagg, a projected top-three pick in the upcoming draft, confirmed his decision earlier this week with an emotional statement thanking Duke Nation, his teammates, and the coaching staff. His exit comes after a dominant freshman season, during which he dazzled fans with elite shot-blocking, all-around versatility, and a relentless competitive drive that made him a leader on and off the court.

“I’ll never forget the energy at Cameron or the bond I had with my brothers in the locker room,” Flagg said in his statement. “But now it’s time to take the next step. I’m entering the NBA Draft and chasing my dream.”

Scheyer acknowledged the huge impact Flagg had during his short time in Durham and admitted replacing him won’t be easy. Still, he remains confident in the roster that’s taking shape heading into next season.

“Any time you lose a guy like Cooper, there’s going to be an adjustment,” Scheyer said. “But we’re returning key players who know what it takes to compete at this level.”

Among the key returners are veteran guards Tyrese Proctor and Caleb Foster, along with high-flying forward Sean Stewart. Proctor’s leadership and experience will be critical, while Foster’s scoring and playmaking are expected to take a leap forward. Stewart’s energy, defense, and development will also be key as Duke looks to stay competitive in a loaded ACC.

Scheyer also hinted at more additions to the roster, stating, “We’re not done building. We’re adding guys who are hungry, who fit Duke’s culture, and who want to win.”

While Flagg’s departure is a major storyline, Scheyer’s message was clear: Duke is far from finished. With a strong core returning and more talent incoming, the Blue Devils are still poised to be a force.

“This isn’t the end of anything,” Scheyer said. “It’s the beginning of the next chapter.”
