Head Coach Jon Scheyer Drops Truth Bombshell on Cooper Flagg

Head Coach Jon Scheyer Drops Truth Bombshell on Cooper Flagg After Just-Concluded Interview

Duke Blue Devils head coach Jon Scheyer isn’t holding back—and his latest comments about incoming freshman phenom Cooper Flagg have the college basketball world buzzing.

In a post-interview moment that’s already gone viral, Scheyer dropped what fans are calling a truth bomb about the projected No. 1 NBA pick and the future face of Duke basketball. “He’s the real deal,” Scheyer said. “And I don’t say that lightly. Cooper’s not just a special talent—he’s got the mindset, the toughness, and the hunger to be great right now.”

For a coach who’s usually measured with praise, this kind of hype from Scheyer speaks volumes.

Flagg, the 6’9″ forward out of Maine, has been a household name in hoops circles since middle school, but now that he’s officially on campus, the reality is setting in: Duke has a generational player walking through Cameron Indoor.

And Scheyer knows exactly what that means.

“This is Duke,” Scheyer continued. “Pressure comes with the jersey. But Coop doesn’t run from it—he embraces it. He wants that target on his back. That’s rare.”

Since taking over for Coach K, Jon Scheyer has had massive shoes to fill. But he’s already proven that he’s more than capable of carrying the Duke legacy into a new era.

Landing and now leading Cooper Flagg may be his biggest move yet—and it’s a statement to the entire college basketball world: Duke isn’t rebuilding. Duke is reloading.

Flagg, who reclassified to join the 2024–25 class, is expected to be a one-and-done superstar. But Scheyer made it clear that this season isn’t about individual hype—it’s about chasing banners. “Cooper wants to win. He’s not here for the spotlight.

He’s here for the work,” Scheyer said. “And when you combine that with his raw ability, you get something really, really dangerous.”

With a stacked recruiting class, strong returning core, and now the full arrival of Flagg, Duke is set to be a national title contender once again. And if Jon Scheyer’s words are any indication, fans better get used to seeing highlight reels and headlines—because the Blue Devils are about to run the show.
