Early Retirement Call: Mikaela Shiffrin suffers Reoccurring ‘Severe Muscle Trauma ‘….

Mikaela Shiffrin, the renowned American alpine skier, sustained a significant injury during the FIS World Cup giant slalom race in Killington, Vermont, on November 30, 2024. While leading after her first run, Shiffrin crashed near the finish line, colliding with a gate and the protective fencing. This accident resulted in a deep puncture wound to her right abdomen and severe muscle trauma, though fortunately, no bones, ligaments, or internal organs were damaged. 

Following the crash, Shiffrin underwent surgery to clean the wound and remove old scar tissue. Her recovery process was both physically and mentally challenging, involving weeks of rehabilitation to regain strength and overcome psychological hurdles associated with the injury. 

Demonstrating remarkable resilience, Shiffrin returned to competition on January 30, 2025, finishing tenth in the slalom event at Courchevel. Her comeback culminated in a historic achievement on February 23, 2025, when she secured her 100th World Cup victory in slalom at Sestriere, Italy. This milestone solidified her status as one of the greatest alpine skiers in history.
