The New England Patriots have significant cap space this offseason, and how they use it will shape their future.
After a rough 4-13 season, the Patriots now have the advantage of a young franchise quarterback on a rookie deal. Drake Maye showed plenty of promise in his first year, but he lacked weapons in the offense.
A true number-one receiver would make a huge difference, something New England has struggled to find since Tom Brady’s departure. This could finally be the year that changes.
Nick Villano of FanSided predicts the Patriots will land star wide receiver Tee Higgins in free agency. Higgins, who has been a key player for the Cincinnati Bengals over the past five seasons, recorded 10 touchdowns in just 12 games this year.
“No team needs a receiver more than the Patriots,” Villano wrote. “They mishandled Mac Jones, and they can’t afford to do the same with Drake Maye.
Higgins might be expensive, but New England has the cap space to make it happen. With Maye on a rookie deal and Mike Vrabel at the helm, adding Higgins should be a top priority.”
At 26 years old, the 6-foot-4, 219-pound receiver had a strong season when healthy, posting 911 yards on 73 catches despite missing five games due to injuries.
Cincinnati could place the franchise tag on Higgins, but doing so would weaken their leverage in keeping him long-term. Given their financial commitment to Ja’Marr Chase, it may not be feasible to pay both receivers top-tier contracts.
This opens the door for the Patriots to make a strong push for Higgins in free agency.
