After their disastrous 2024 season, the Cleveland Browns parted ways with offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey. This created an opportunity for a fresh, innovative offensive mind to step in and revamp not only the team’s offense but also shape their next starting quarterback for the 2025 season.
However, with the internal promotion of Tommy Rees to offensive coordinator, it appeared that the Browns were opting to revert to head coach Kevin Stefanski’s familiar offensive system, with him potentially resuming play-calling duties.
Since Rees was Stefanski’s hire, there was some hope that he might bring his own influence, but Thursday’s announcement put any doubts to rest.
Stefanski confirmed to reporters that he will once again handle play-calling responsibilities in 2025, a role he had previously given up to Dorsey midway through the 2024 season in an effort to spark the struggling offense. Stefanski stated, “I’m going to call plays, and I reserve the right to change my mind.”
Rees expressed no issue with Stefanski reclaiming play-calling duties, emphasizing that much of the offensive work happens behind the scenes. “Play-calling is just part of the process,” Rees said, adding that he and Stefanski are eager to collaborate and ensure the offense performs well.
Before 2024, Stefanski’s teams consistently ranked in the top 10 in rushing attempts, according to NFL.com. However, last season they plummeted to 28th in the league. With Stefanski back in charge of play-calling, the Browns are expected to emphasize their run game again, supported by a better-coached offensive line and a quarterback suited for deep throws and pocket passing.
This shift suggests the Browns may target veteran quarterbacks with strong decision-making skills but limited mobility, as well as rookie prospects with powerful arms who require development.
As they prepare for the 2025 NFL Draft, Rees and Stefanski will collaborate to identify the ideal quarterback for their system, with two promising prospects potentially available when they pick at No. 2 overall.
