After Disappointing playoff Loss, Head coach Confirms the Lions to Part ways with Star Defender as Veteran also set to leave in Free Agency.

Following a disappointing playoff exit, the Detroit Lions have confirmed they will be parting ways with defensive end Marcus Davenport, while veteran linebacker Derrick Barnes is also expected to depart in free agency.

The move signals a shift in the team’s defensive approach as they look to retool for the upcoming season.

Davenport, who signed with the Lions on a one-year deal, struggled with injuries throughout the season and failed to make the desired impact on the defensive front. Brought in to bolster the pass rush and provide support for star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson, Davenport’s inconsistency and limited availability ultimately led to the team’s decision to move on. In his time with Detroit, he recorded minimal production, struggling to stay on the field due to recurring injuries that hampered his performance. Despite flashes of his potential, the Lions feel they need a more reliable presence to strengthen their defensive line moving forward.

Meanwhile, Derrick Barnes, a key contributor to the Lions’ linebacker corps over the past few seasons, is set to test free agency. Drafted by Detroit in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Barnes gradually carved out a significant role in the defense, known for his physicality and versatility. However, with the emergence of younger linebackers and the potential for Detroit to invest further in the position through the draft or free agency, Barnes’ future with the team has become uncertain. While his departure will leave a gap in the depth chart, the Lions appear ready to explore other options to improve their defensive unit.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell addressed the departures in a press conference, stating, “We appreciate everything Marcus and Derrick have given to this team. They’re both hard workers and great teammates, but we have to make tough decisions as we continue building toward our ultimate goal.”

The Lions’ defense showed promise throughout the season but ultimately fell short in key moments, particularly in the playoffs, where the lack of consistent pressure and defensive lapses were evident. Moving forward, Detroit is expected to prioritize defensive reinforcements, possibly targeting edge rushers and linebackers in free agency or the upcoming NFL Draft.

As the Lions bid farewell to Davenport and Barnes, the focus now shifts to improving a defense that aims to complement their dynamic offense and make another deep playoff run in the 2025 season.
