The Cleveland Browns are expected to make significant changes to their quarterback room this offseason. This could include drafting a top prospect with the No. 2 overall pick, as well as bringing in at least one veteran early in the new league year.
One veteran option that has sparked speculation is Sam Darnold, the Minnesota Vikings quarterback. After being selected third overall in the 2018 draft, Darnold enjoyed a career-best season during his first year with the Vikings. He achieved personal highs in completion percentage (66.2%), passing yards (4,319), and touchdowns (35), leading Minnesota to a 14-3 record, tied for the best in the NFC. However, the Vikings missed out on the NFC North title and the conference’s top playoff seed, which went to the Detroit Lions. The Lions secured the No. 1 seed after defeating the Vikings in a high-stakes regular-season finale.
That pivotal game proved costly for Darnold, who reverted to old habits, such as holding onto the ball too long, struggling with decision-making, and forcing risky throws. He completed just 18 of 41 passes for 166 yards as Minnesota’s offense managed only nine points in a lopsided 31-9 loss.
Darnold’s struggles continued in the Vikings’ wild card game against the Los Angeles Rams. Despite a 25-of-40 performance for 245 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, the offense once again scored just nine points. Adding to his woes, Darnold fumbled in the second quarter, resulting in a Rams defensive touchdown that widened their lead.
Over the span of two games, Darnold’s value has taken a significant hit, both in terms of perception and potential earnings in free agency. While the Vikings could retain him on a reduced deal, the team seems poised to transition to J.J. McCarthy as their future quarterback.
This likely leaves Darnold searching for a new team. While the Browns may need a quarterback, they should steer clear of Darnold. Despite his resurgence this season, he has shown he remains the same inconsistent player he has always been.
