The outcome of the Cleveland Browns’ next two games will significantly influence their position in April’s NFL draft.
They face the Miami Dolphins on Sunday and finish the season against the Baltimore Ravens.
Currently, the Browns hold the No. 5 overall pick but could move up or down depending on these final games. If they end up with a top-three pick, they’ll likely need to strongly consider drafting a quarterback.
In A to Z Sports’ latest mock draft, the Browns are projected to select Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders at No. 5 overall. Sanders is considered the safest quarterback prospect in the draft and should be at the top of Cleveland’s board.
While Miami’s Cam Ward is another intriguing option, his off-schedule play style might not be the best fit for the Browns.
“Shedeur Sanders has shown consistent improvement throughout his college career and capped off his season by nearly leading Colorado to the College Football Playoff. While he doesn’t possess elite physical traits or exceptional mobility, his ability to extend plays, avoid pressure, and keep his eyes downfield makes him a promising prospect for Cleveland as they look to move on from Deshaun Watson.”
Watson’s tenure with the Browns has been largely unsuccessful over his three seasons. To secure the future of the current front office and coaching staff, Cleveland must shift focus. Drafting Sanders would provide them with a skilled quarterback on a rookie contract.
In 2024, Sanders posted impressive numbers with 35 touchdown passes, eight interceptions, and 3,926 passing yards while completing 74% of his passes. This marked significant progress from his rookie season, where he recorded 3,230 yards and 27 touchdowns.
The Watson era in Cleveland appears to be over, at least as a starter. The Browns now need to prioritize finding their next franchise quarterback, and Sanders might just be the solution they need.
