Brown’s veteran Shocks Brown Community With Retirement As Hope For A Rebuild Collapse

As the 2024 season nears its end, veteran guard Joel Bitonio faces the reality of his football career winding down. With just two weeks left, the 11-year veteran acknowledges he will discuss retirement this offseason, weighing whether his body can handle another grueling year or if it’s time to walk away.

For now, his focus remains on finishing the season strong, even though the Browns are 3-12 and have little at stake in the final games. Once the season concludes, Bitonio plans to reflect on his future.

“The biggest factor is personal—how my body feels heading into another season,” Bitonio shared ahead of Week 17. “Football is an amazing game, but it takes a toll on you. You have to think about how you’ll feel in 10, 15, or 20 years. So, I’ll talk it over with my family and see where we’re at.”

Bitonio’s deliberation comes as teammate Myles Garrett recently made it clear he has no interest in a rebuild, emphasizing the need for a clear plan from the organization. While Bitonio isn’t threatening to leave, at age 33, he shares Garrett’s focus on winning as a priority.

“At this stage, you just want to win,” Bitonio said. “Being 3-12 is tough. Losing wears on your body and spirit. It’d be nice to hear the plan for the future and see how much winning we can aim for.”

Bitonio also reflects on the career of Browns legend Joe Thomas, who retired during a challenging rebuild. “Joe was in a similar spot when he retired, and I’m not sure if the rebuild factored into his decision or if he was simply done,” Bitonio said. “But it’s something I’ll consider in the offseason.”

Bitonio and Thomas shared years together on Cleveland’s offensive line, with Thomas serving as a mentor. Thomas famously recounted how Peyton Manning once urged him to demand a trade to Denver, but Thomas chose to stay in Cleveland despite the opportunity. Looking back, Bitonio acknowledges the uncertainty in chasing a championship through a trade.

“It’s hard to predict who’ll win the Super Bowl or if the move will work out. Injuries happen, plans fall apart, and it’s not always worth it. I don’t see myself taking that path,” Bitonio explained.

For Bitonio, staying in Cleveland feels right. “This organization gave me a chance, and I’ve spent 11 years here. We’ve had tough times, but also great memories. They’ve done so much for me and my family. At this stage, I can’t see myself wearing another helmet—it just doesn’t make sense.”
