However, could the Browns also consider adding a veteran to stabilize the position in 2025?
Currently, Cleveland has Deshaun Watson and Jameis Winston on the roster, but Watson is recovering from an Achilles injury, and Winston is set to enter free agency.
Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports has suggested a fascinating option: Kirk Cousins, the recently benched quarterback of the Atlanta Falcons. “A potential reunion with Kevin Stefanski, who served as Cousins’ offensive coordinator during his early years in Minnesota, could bring stability,” Benjamin noted.
He added that Stefanski faces uncertainty with Watson’s rehab and future while the Browns possess tools like Jerry Jeudy, a strong defense, and a high draft pick to regain competitiveness. Cousins could potentially sign a modest deal and find confidence under Stefanski’s guidance.
But is Cousins truly the right choice for Cleveland as a 2025 starter?
This season, the 36-year-old quarterback has recorded 3,508 passing yards, 18 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions, with a 66.9% completion rate and an 88.6 passer rating. His recent struggles include just one touchdown against nine interceptions over his last five games, leading to his benching.
Cousins signed a $180 million deal with $100 million guaranteed with Atlanta last offseason, but the Falcons could release him soon, allowing the Browns to potentially sign him to a short-term deal.
While taking a chance on Cousins could be a worthwhile gamble, relying on him as a guaranteed starter for 2025 may not be Cleveland’s wisest move.
